General J.A. Fuller was the architect and completed in 1878, and on the right is the Rajabai Clock
Tower and Bombay University campus buildings were designed by British Architect Sir Gilbert Scott and
was completed in 1878. Also visible in the foreground is Government Secretariat building designed by
Colonel H St. Clair Wilkins and completed 1874.
The Gothic edifices along the eastern edge of the present Oval maidan (the central section of the
Esplanade) were originally conceived to sit along what was in the 1860s the western sea front of
Bombay. Buildings were built majestically & designed in the Victorian Gothic traditional style fronting the
sea across the Esplanade and assert a character for south Bombay in colonial India.
